The Domestic Enemy

Move America Forward has been on the tip of the spear in the fight against the phony "We Support the Troops" liberals and the even more despicable groups, such as Code Pink. They are once again on the front-lines in Berkeley CA, where a lawless city council has put the Marine Recruiting Station under siege, by their willingness to abuse their offices' to promote the harassment of citizens engaged in their legal duties.

Even in the face of the threat of a suspension of governmental funding, the council continues to demonstrate their contempt for America, our military members, and our Constitution. In my opinion, the City of Berkeley must be shown that no one stands outside the law. Not Presidents, Governors, Senators or any other elected official in the land. I urge the Congress to act to cut off funding to Berkeley CA, and any other city or state following their example. I further urge that the Justice Dept. be directed to investigate, to determine if there has been any criminal or civil violation to be prosecuted. Move America Forward has asked for help getting this message out to the Internet community. Their statement appears below:

"Move America Forward is proud to unveil our brand-new TV ad that fights back against the Berkeley City Council's campaign against our military.

Watch the ad, share it with others - please time is of the essence, and we must get this passed around the Internet ASAP!" - Move America Forward

Email this message to your friends, go to their website for more information on how you can help in this fight. I will personally forward comments to them from this site.

Aid to Africa

One of my favorite websites. This little send up from the folks at The Onion takes a poke at a Washington sacred cow......Foreign Aid. OK, I will admit that they have a short revenue producer on the front and back, but we are all capitalists here at TH. I recommend that you continue to the end since their bump-out screen is usually hilarious. I normally watch these twice, the second time with the sound off so I can concentrate on the screen crawler.

Caution: Viewer content is not PC, liberals are advised not to watch without adult supervision.

McCain Says, Get in Line!

Dr. Robert (Bobby) Eberle is President and CEO of GOPUSA, a company dedicated to promoting the grassroots conservative philosophy. In his most recent essay he makes the argument that the so-called independent vote has shrunk to a point that turnout is the key to winning elections more than the old strategy of moving to the center. He points to the opinion, held by the operatives of political strategy, that polarization has all but eliminated the independent voter. Dr. Eberle is a sound conservative and it would be unfair to characterize his position as being that of a hold your nose pundit. To his credit he calls instead, for the republican establishment to return to the base as quickly as they can. His essay includes the following excerpts:

“However, something happened in 2006 for which the establishment was not prepared. They learned that a turnout strategy will not work if the Republican base loses faith. Disgusted by corruption, failed promises on spending, the "good old boy (woman) nomination of Harriet Miers, and more, conservative turnout went down, and the Democrats took control not only of the U.S. House but also the Senate.”

'the Washington Times is reporting that "John McCain's campaign manager yesterday said the candidate will not pander for conservative support.' Pander for support? Only through the support of the conservative base does Sen. McCain have any hope of winning in November. He should be going out of his way to energize all Republicans by promising to uphold core Republican ideals.”

The Times included this quote as part of the same article:

“He (referring to Rick Davis, Mr. McCain's campaign manager) also disputed the sentiment from some conservatives that Mr. McCain needs to make a specific gesture to conservatives, such as selecting a vice-presidential nominee they can be excited about, to win their support. Instead, Mr. Davis said the important move is conservatives joining the McCain campaign, including defense, economic and social conservatives.”

Dr. Eberle is soliciting signatures on a new contract with conservatives, which I support and have signed, but hold little hope that it will be of any real value, at least in the near term. Since GOPUSA invites comments, I contributed the follow which I am determined will be my last essay concerning this primary season. There are plenty of governmental lunacies that require condemnation, if not outright mockery, to limit myself strictly to the presidential race.

My Comment to GOPUSA (with some revisions and additions):

It is surprising that Dr. Eberle could write such a lengthy essay and never once touch on the reasons, which prompted me to stop donating to the RNC. In the run-up to the '06 mid-term elections an RNC who worker called soliciting support (read: money) was the first to feel the frustration from this member of the base. The two key reasons given were, the President out campaigning for Amnesty, and the failure of McCain and his gang of 7 to stay on their own side of the aisle. One might assume that these concerns are included in Eberle’s reference to “and more”, but it is troubling that conservatives are avoiding articulating many of the very serious reasons behind the ’06 disaster.

Mr. Rove gathered the remaining elected republicans after the defeat and told them the problem was spending alone, a major misread in my opinion, and Mr. Boehner, the minority leader, tried to make the case here on Townhall that the congress had “gotten it”. Does anyone honestly believe that after the spending in 2007 that there was any truth to those articles? I informed the RNC phone solicitor in ’06 that when they managed to bring the offenders under control I would return to my donations. I’m still waiting!

For 40 years I have worked for, and donated to, republican candidates. In this cycle there was only one candidate I can not hold my nose and vote for, and that is John McCain. He is like the schoolyard bully, who says to his victim, not only will you eat the dirt, but also, you will like it. I didn't eat the dirt then and I am too old to start now. I took my beating instead, and I will accept it again before I will accept changing a lifetime of principles.

I signed the contract, little good it will do, but it expresses my ideology. Rush Limbaugh is fond of saying that he is right 99% of the time, but anyone who catches his show knows that he has been predicting the implosion of the democrat party for years. The implosion seems to have taken place, but it has been on the right instead. This was completely predictable given the almost constant failure of this republican president, and his congressional majorities, to make any discernible rollback of liberal policies or to reduce the nanny government they have produced. To the contrary government grew at record levels adding new social welfare programs at tremendous, incalculable costs to the taxpayers, and pumping new billions into the myriad of departments never defined as a function of government by the constitution.

In ’08 republicans have tried to emulate the winning democrat strategy of '06 by running moderate to left of center republicans, pure genius (is there a font for sarcasm), and all it accomplished was to tear huge fissures in the republican base. Conservative resistance, like that displayed on the Miers nomination, was unsuccessful in bringing a viable conservative candidate into the race.

Huckabee sends religious conservatives spinning in one direction, while McCain grabs off the defense conservatives and a smattering of fiscal conservatives. Thompson had support from all three prongs of the conservative movement but was too slow to capitalize. Romney I think got the remaining fiscal conservatives, tried to juke, but got caught and was tagged a flipper and we may never know why Rudy was running as a republican. Paul is a Libertarian, and if they ever get a national defense plank and lose the druggie issues they might someday be a viable party. I have advocated elsewhere for a conservative takeover of the Libertarian party as the quickest means to eliminating their unacceptable party planks and ending up with a viable conservative third party.

As someone who thinks of himself as a conservative first, although before the term was popularized I used to say a constitutional traditionalist, conservative was shorter and easier, and expressed the same ideology, I now find myself numbered among the politically homeless, witness the McCain managers statement above. It is odd, since my ideology encompasses all three of the legs of conservatism, strong national defense, fiscal restraint guided by the constitution, and a resistance to social engineering as not being a function of government, that no party now offers a candidate that doesn't require me to abandon at least one of these core principles.

If McCain is elected, even if it is closer than the 2000 election, if that is possible, he will portray his election as full validation for abandoning sovereignty and all of the other actions he has taken which have been decidedly anti-conservative. You know them all, so there is no reason to enumerate the many McCain/[insert a liberal] bills. If we come together, ignore the snubs, and outright attacks, and somehow manage to elect McCain, we will win the White House but we will lose our country in the process. Es cierto, No?

In support of this assertion the following quote from the Times article speaks volumes:

“Mr. McCain yesterday held a closed-door meeting with House Republicans to consolidate his support and begin unifying the party's elected leaders behind him. Even though many of those Republicans have fought Mr. McCain bitterly on immigration, campaign finance reform and other issues, Mr. Davis said the meeting was so congenial it was ‘almost like a rally’."

The democrat majority in the congress will be happy to accommodate a President McCain on amnesty, climate change, attacks on the constitution, and it would seem given the statement above ,that we can’t expect help from the “rally” crew.

Mr. Davis’ suggestion that it is conservatives who should rally to the McCain banner, not the candidate who must make overtures to the conservative voters is insulting at best. Given this kind of strategic thinking I suppose I can expect them to say something nasty about my mother as we get closer to election day. Yeah! That's the ticket.

Berkeley CA: Red Square West

Jamie Colby of Fox News is soliciting comment on the Fox News Blog concerning the Berkeley CA council's ongoing attack on Marine Recruiters in their locale. MoveAmericaFoward.org is asking that all who are interested contribute posts on this subject. MoveAmericaForward is planning a counter protest for Feb. 12th and Jamie Colby is following the story and referring to the blog posts. Not to be left out, Sgt Relic kicked in the following:

"I am a former Marine, wounded in Vietnam, and discharged for disabilities. Until my dying day I will carry with me, not just the scars of battle, but the bright memory of what it was like to be a member of the United States Marine Corp. Graduating from Parris Island and having the privilege to serve this great country, in a time of need, was a singular period in my life.

The council of Berkeley CA has again demonstrated that they know nothing of the basic duty and responsibility which citizenship requires. They declare themselves above the constitution and I submit that they are therefore outside of its guarantees.

This act is lawless and is, in my opinion, little different from an attempt at succession and rebellion. Their actions are sophomoric in the style of angry adolescents, who in their self-righteous immaturity, fire off a tirade to the school principal. The federal government must act to correct their behavior just as administrators and parents would act in my simile.

I would wager that the recruiters posted to this station would be happy to get back to Iraq or Afghanistan, which is probably a less hostile environment to them. Becoming a Marine is tougher than any recruiter could ever explain, but I find it impossible to believe that anyone could be unfamiliar with the deeds that have made the Marine Corps the elite organization it is today.

I could never fully articulate the contempt that I feel for the Berkeley council and their scurrilous attack on an organization whose bravery, integrity and honor have never been called into question."

If you can find a moment to post at Fox it would be great. It would be nice to see Townhall well represented.

I'm Outta Here

This has been a rough week. One of my employees introduced a virus into the workforce, which has proved to be only slightly less virulent than the "Black Death". I have been recovering but, outside of the occasional comment, I have not felt much like writing this week.
The Relic's have decided to decamp tomorrow for Florida. We will be surveying the damage done in the wake of the Florida primary and, since we are visiting family, will have an opportunity to debrief some of the deranged Boca residents who voted for Amnesty John. Although we had hoped that FEMA would assist with the much-needed mental health resources, we find that they are not even on the ground yet.

We will, of course, attempt direct interventions and provide counseling as needed, but since we are not health professionals, I fear this may be inadequate.

We will be carrying as many copies of the pocket constitution, pictures of what a fence looks like, as well as reference materials from such forgotten authors as Adam Smith, F.A. Hayek, and Ronald Reagan. Sadly, we will be limited by weight restrictions and there exists the possibility that TSA will not allow some of these materials on the airplane. Regardless, I will be commenting and blogging from sunny Florida beginning on Monday.

Excellent article by Brett Winterble of Human Events today.

Ted Takes the Plunge

The ruling family of democratic politics, the Kennedy clan, has entered the fray for 2008. First, this from the AP, “The daughter of President John F. Kennedy endorsed Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, saying he could inspire Americans in the same way her father once did”. Coming close on the heels of a complete waxing in the S.C. primary, this had to be considered a blow to the dual candidacy of Bill & Hillary Clinton, however, it would seem that when you’re having a bad day things could still get worse.
The Politico is now reporting that Senator Edward Kennedy (L-PROMA) will also endorse the Obama candidacy. The headline reads “Ted Kennedy embraces Obama” and reports “The embrace [this is thought to be a metaphorical embrace] provides a dramatic rocket for Obama to ride into the frantic, nationwide campaigning ahead of the spate of Super Tuesday primaries on Feb. 5, the biggest day for nominating contests in U.S. history. Caroline Kennedy, the senator's niece and the daughter of President John F. Kennedy, will also appear at the rally.” That’s right friends, it’s another Twofer!
This turn of events seems to beg the question: What trumps what? Does the brother of JFK and RFK; also a senior Senator in his own right, and the daughter of JFK, trump a former President and his junior Senator wife? The Politico story includes this quote from a high-level democrat, “This is the biggest Democratic endorsement Obama could possibly get short of Bill Clinton,” It is reported that the endorsement comes despite a personal phone call from the former President. Wouldn’t you have loved to listen in on that particular call?
The RNC striking a conciliatory note, perhaps motivated by memories of the loss of donations created by Amnesty support from both Mr. Bush & Senator McCain, said, “Senator Kennedy’s rejection of his friend and colleague is a stunning blow to Clinton’s campaign.” The RNC is no stranger to stunning blows following the 2006 midterms.
What does it all mean? Team Clinton offers this useful insight in a quote from spokesman Doug Hattaway, “At the end of the day, the voters are going to choose a candidate on their merits, not on their endorsements.” There you have it from the good folks who brought you triangulation, titillation, and investigations, ENDORSEMENTS MEAN DIDDYLEY!

Thompson Withdraws

Fred Thompson has announced that he will discontinue his pursuit of the Republican nomination for President. I was an early supporter of Fred. Back in March of 2007, he seemed to me to be the candidate who could take the White House, and repair the damage done to the party by a long series of weak leaders, who had turned it into democrat lite. I admit that I would have been happier if he had decided to enter the race in July, I know that the stage was set as far as I was concerned, but it didn’t happen and there was a loss of momentum, from which his campaign never seemed to recover. I still believe Thompson was the man with the right message as evidenced by the fact that he couldn’t get mugged by the press, right or left, if he had been standing in front of an open bar.

The press has been trying their level best to pick the candidates in this race, so in the tradition of the press I have decided on the following course of action:

Help Wanted

Conservative party seeks candidate for the position of President of the United States. Successful candidate will receive an annual salary of $400k plus benefits, medical, living quarters, and 24-hour security. Candidate must be willing to travel. The candidate must possess the following qualities:

Must be willing to defend the sovereignty of the United States.

Must be prepared to secure the borders.

Must be willing to turn off the job magnet currently attracting illegals.

Must be willing to defend the country against terrorism.

Must possess great fiscal restraint in managing a large budget.

Will be responsible for controlling company spending.

Respect for original intent a must.

Must support the 2nd Amendment.

Must respect traditional family values.

Must be committed to limited management control.

This is a contract position for four years with the option for one additional four-year renewal. Renewal is subject to job performance. The candidate must be over 35 years of age, and a U.S. citizen –English is a must! Video resumes are acceptable. We expect to fill this position on November 4, 2008; however, some previous decisions have been made later than that date.

If you feel that you can solve the problems of the world, while operating within the constraints of the Constitution, and are willing to work with people with varying levels of sanity, send your resume to Sgt Relic care of this blog. The successful candidate will be initially compensated 1 vote.

I suddenly find myself without a candidate. What to do? Soooo many RINOs to choose from and not a conservative in sight.

Truce: Hillary & Obama

On Jan.15th a truce was called between the Clinton and Obama camps.

Yesterday in Nevada, perhaps in an attempt to develop a fallback career, Obama tried out his standup routine in Las Vegas. The AP reports that when speaking about the debate questions, he said "Folks, they don't tell you what they mean! This from a candidate who has managed to avoid actually saying anything of any real substance thus far in his campaign.

Obama is reported to have continued on the subject of Hillary's vote in favor of the bankruptcy bill in 2001, he quipped that she said, 'I voted for it but I was glad to see that it didn't pass.'(This is classic John Kerry), adding, "If you didn't want to see it passed, then you can vote against it!" This is quite a spectacular departure from statements on his website meant to explain his penchant for voting "Present".

This is explained, of course, as being deeply nuanced, incomprehensible to the uninitiated but somehow capable of conveying silent messages, sometimes contradictory, but always understandable by his fellows democrats in Illinois.

Obama then took on a recent Clinton accusation, tying him to supporters of the Yucca nuclear waste project. Obama denied these allegations vehemently, adding this pearl of a quote, "I'm against Yucca Mountain. I think the science is not there." Holy Global Warming! A democrat who doesn’t think that the debate is over?

One is forced to conclude that the truce is over! On the other hand, perhaps the Clintons well known sense of humor will give Hillary a good cackle. For those of you keeping score at home, this truce was shorter that an Israeli - Palestinian cease fire.

WRITER'S STRIKE

The writer’s strike has spilled over into Casa Relic.  Mrs. Relic and I have been enjoying the prequel to “Lonesome Dove” currently running on CBS. Yes, I know it’s the Couric Bulls**t Station but “Comanche Moon” has remained faithful to the original story line.

The actors playing Captains Call and McCrea are doing a first class job of playing a younger version of the roles played by Tommy Lee Jones and Robert Duvall in the original. Final episode is tonight, after which, I hope to get a new post up.

I never could resist a good horsesh*t and ordnance flick.

Virginia Moves to Ban Testicles

“I believe there are more instances of the abridgement of freedom of the people by gradual and silent encroachments by those in power than by violent and sudden usurpations.” – James Madison

Here in Virginia, “Mother of Presidents”, home to Washington, Jefferson, and Madison, the citizens of the Commonwealth are in a period of great danger, also know as, the first session of the General Assembly. The first session is a 60-day period, during which our legislators enter into a whirlwind of activity in an attempt to conduct the business of the people.

The Shad Plank, a Virginia blog, is reporting the following:

“Del. Lionell Spruill, D-Chesapeake, is proposing a bill that would ban a decorative accessory that some truck drivers have hanging below their license plates. You may have seen them out on the road -- they resemble a certain part of the male reproductive system.

Late last week a few Richmond TV stations were talking to Spruill about other legislation when he started talking about how a constituent called and asked him to put in this more ... ummm... sensitive ... bill. Spruill says he is concerned because the accessories have been getting bigger lately  (we are not creative enough to make this up).

The video is priceless - wait for the point where the reporter asks "So you're opposed to testicles?"

"Yes...YES," Spruill replies.”……….. Video is here!

Bans, it seems, are rapidly becoming the national pastime. In fact, the zeal that the various levels of government demonstrate for bans is only surpassed by their thirst for tax dollars. This session will certainly prove to be no exception, bans against smoking are always proposed, texting while driving is new this year, and now banning trucks and cars with testicles. If the latter ever gets to SCOTUS you could put this one on Pay-Per-View!

This is “Nannyism” at it’s most hysterical, notice that in the video Del. Spruill emphasizes the safety issue of distraction of motorists, but ultimately it all comes down to the manner in which the driver is operating their vehicle. Do we not already have ordinances covering Reckless Driving, and Operating a vehicle in an unsafe manner? Not enough, we apparently need these diligent legislators to devise laws to cover every possible action that can be undertaken by a citizen and codify it into law.

“I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them.” – Thomas Jefferson

Americans really need to step back and stop shouting “There ought to be a law” every time they don’t happen to like something. You have been warned!  Sarge hates broccoli!

CNN: Clearly Unbalanced

The Drudge Report is carrying a banner headline today that  reads: CNN Poll: Clinton or Obama would Beat any Republican. When you consider the pollster's recent stellar performance in New Hampshire, it stretches the imagination to give much credence to such a claim.  Long referred to as the Clinton News Network, one would  suppose to distinguish them from the Clinton Newsletter, aka the New York Times, they now make the claim that ANY Republican would be defeated by either of their socialist favorites.

ANY, you might assume would include all of the Republican candidates, but you'd be wrong. It seems that CNN has come to the conclusion that Thompson is either not running or is not a Republican. What was the criteria for this poll? Only candidates with double digit poll numbers unless they are a Conservative? The MSM is bouncing from pillar to post trying to pick the Republican candidate they believe can be beaten in November. Right now, "Amnesty" John is their RINO of choice, so was Rudy, Mitt, and Huckleberry.

There is a clear message here, it is a message of omission! The MSM is working overtime to keep Republicans ping-ponging from one candidate to another while doing their level best to make sure nobody looks at the only real conservative in this race, Fred Thompson.
