The Power of the Press

"Freedom of the press is guaranteed only to those who own one." A.J. Liebling

This may be a good time to visit a subject that was very familiar to conservatives last fall but since then hasn’t been discussed, at least in any detail. That subject is the media and their influence in framing the issues and defining the candidates.

The right has very few voices in that 24/7 cacophony, and those voices mostly limited to talk radio, don’t reach into every market as is the case with the major networks. The press and the broadcast media belong to the left. The press denies it but the evidence is clear to see to any who will take the time to listen and sift out the facts.

Here’s a common scenario. You pick up a newspaper and below the fold there is a small headline that says, “Investigation Underway in Texas”. Somewhere around paragraph 11 you will find that the target of the investigation is a democrat but only if you’re willing to wade through the proceeding 10 paragraphs.

The same article about the right will read, “Republican Under Investigation” and will very likely identify the party affiliation of the target numerous times, using every GOP variant possible, including any peripheral associations such as their church, military background, community organizations, and family members. I think of it as “No stone left unsmeared” but most are familiar with the technique as the politics of personally destruction made popular during the BJ years.

In the last election cycle, this conservative, and I suspect many others, thought that the press, with the willing support of the RNC, manipulated the outcome of the primaries with the clear intent of giving the republican voters the most divisive candidate possible, John McAmnesty. A candidate who could NOT unite the party but was sufficiently left wing to virtually guarantee, if not a victory, at least the advancement of the left wing agenda.

The media was as blatant as I have ever seen it in the last election but the single most important act they achieved was ignoring the conservative candidates, which resulted in their campaigns failing to get any traction whatsoever. Duncan Hunter, Tom Tancredo, Fred Thompson, and yes, even Ron Paul couldn’t get mugged by the press, EVEN ON TOWNHALL! We were left to decide which RINO to vote for and many conservatives voted third party or just stayed home. The outcome was practically pre-ordained.

I suggest that this process is starting again. In recent months we have gotten news reports about “Green” Newt, “Massachusetts” Mitt, Huckleberry Hound and Sarah Palin, everybody’s favorite moose killer. I like Sarah Palin. What’s not to like about her? Well, first off she was McLame’s running mate. Secondly, she was not ready to be on the big stage and wound up getting her head handed to her by a lightweight like “Perky” Katie Couric. Lastly, she has proven herself pro-illegal alien by approving driver’s licenses for illegals, something even Hillary wasn’t ready to do. There is more to being a conservative than just shooting polar bears.

I would suggest that none of these people can beat an incumbent Obama. They represent what is wrong with the GOP. Gingrich has more political baggage than a 747, Romney still suffers the same vulnerabilities he carried into the last primary cycle. And, Huckabee is only good for setting off another GOP jihad. Bobby Jindal blew his 15 minutes, IMO, when he stumbled through his rebuttal to the non-State of Union speech and hasn’t really gotten any air time since. Perhaps he can recover.

Sarah Palin can run a personality campaign a la Obama but I haven’t seen anything from her to suggest that she can win the contest of cult or that she is now ready for primetime.

There are some real live, dyed in the wool, conservatives out there but as I pointed out, they are not getting any recognition in the national media. Jim DeMint, Mike Pence, Pete Sessions, Update! Mark Sanford (It would appear that Gov. Sanford is capable of refusing bailout money but NOT able to stay in his own yard), our stable of governors is sadly depleted (And getting worse everyday), as well as Jeb Hensarling are just a few of the possibilities that we should be exploring. Forget the past along with those who represent it.

The press is priming for another Bob Dole. It is not in the best interests of conservatives, or America, to allow them to choose the opposition candidate. Be wary of those the press chooses to cover. They are probably RINO’s and if we are dumb enough to get played twice in a row, then shame on us!

And Your Little Dog Too!

Apparently, as previously observed by Frank J. at IMAO, botox does not in fact make your brain younger. Pictured above, Nancy Pelosi, affectionately known as “Comrade Speaker” to her associates in the Politburo, leads the Congressional Castrato Choir, some 400 strong, in a rousing rendition (Oops!) version of the classic “Hallelujah I’m a Bum” in honor of those Americans who will soon be homeless, unemployed and riding the rails.

The Nanny-in-Chief was briefed on the upcoming fall TV lineup as part of her ongoing duties to interfere in every aspect of the public’s life and mistakenly thought that “Glee”, a musical drama about Glee Clubs, was to be an American Idol style competition. It is thought that Bawney Fwank is very disappointed since he was to have the boy soprano lead in this production.

The Speaker has had some cognitive problems recently centered on whether, while as a member of the “Gang of Four”, not to be confused with the Chinese version since those folks actually went to jail, but rather as one of the four ranking members of the Congressional Intelligence Committee, she had knowledge of advance interrogation techniques including waterboarding.

Porter Goss, formerly the ranking member of that committee and later CIA Director, said, “We understood what the CIA was doing”. Red Nanny (Commie-SF) has put forward a number of fascinating recollections of those briefings and her final word on the issue is that she “stands by her comments”. Now all we need to know is WHICH comment she’s talking about!!!

Witch hunts always bring out the best in DC. Democrats came into control in ’06 and again in ’08 pledging to focus on the future and let the dead rest. Did anybody seriously believe that a party that boasts a Nancy Pelosi, Henry Waxman, Chucky Scummer, Bawney Fwank, et al, and is lead by the Teleprompter-in-Chief can possibly resist bringing the circus to town? NOT IN THIS LIFETIME!

So I say let the show trials begin! Let’s have every Republican still living who ever served in government dragged before congressional committees, special prosecutors, and senate investigators until the whole darn government is frozen solid. That will very likely be our best bet for escaping the fixes that our new Marxist regime has in mind for us.

Remember, to politicians, wasting time is second only to spending money we don’t have as a pastime in that 75 sq. miles surrounded by reality called Washington.

Smith, Friedman, Sowell and Now, Annie Leonard!

H/T to Harvey at IMAO for this little "green" gem.

Annie Leonard is a former Greenpeace employee who has gone the Goracle one better and produced a video that manages to cramp more wrong information into a short video than His Holiness managed in an entire movie. Best part? This video has been ordered by over 7000 teachers, churches, and other organizations and been assigned viewing for students by hundreds of other teachers. The NYT reported that one kid subjected to this video was so effected by the video that he expressed guilt at wanting a new set of legos.

As one who holds the opinion that the echo chamber of the classroom for the last 35 years has been responsible for electing the most anti-American president in history, one shudders to think what this next generation of mind-numbed mush-brains will think is a responsible leader.

Like Harvey, I'm not going to dissect this one here, I'll leave that to the readers, but I will get the ball rolling with a quote from the video that hit me right between the eyes. Leonard says, "It’s the government’s job is to watch out for us, to take care of us. That’s their job."

Warning: If you require blood pressure medications you might want to make sure you've taken them before clicking on that little arrow.

For those of you who are interested in taking this one apart here's a link to an HTML version of the script: Commie Drivel

Stronger Sword Control Laws are Needed!

The recent uptick in sword related crimes cries out for government intervention. Two dead in Indiana , following a sword battle last week, at the hands of a modern day Cyrano and now a Ninja has attempted to rob 2 Weymouth MA dry cleaners armed only with his trusty Ninja sword. There are thought to be millions of these swords, unregistered, and requiring no identification to purchase and with proper care and maintenance will last for hundreds of years. Many of these weapons are in the hands of adolescents masquerading as innocent room decorations. Could this Ninja be part of one of the militias DHS warned us about? Ninjas are very hard to see, in fact, there could be one standing right next to you and you probably wouldn't realize it until he was making off with your dry cleaning.

Seriously, how long before some moron in the congress calls for a ban on swords? I just figured to get a jump on it and start the ball rolling.

Virginia Beach VA Tea Party

Virginia Beach Va was the sight of the southside Hampton Roads Tea Party yesterday. It was a cool 54 degrees with a stiff wind blowing out of the north but still drew an estimated 700 to 1100 (depending on the source) protesters. That estimate was from the local police but we will have to wait on the Department of Homeland Security for the official enemies list to verify the count. They certainly got it all on tape since their office is right across the street. The local CBS affiliate covered the protest, they could hardly pretend it wasn't happening since their office overlooks the plaza, but the coverage was about what you might expect. Here's a short clip:

The media wants to spin this as just about taxes or just about Obama but the reality is it's about constitutional government and borrowing and spending.....the taxes will come later. Our local news guy threw the huge Obama tax reduction out as a defense; you remember that $8 don't you?

Here are some snaps from the Tea Party:

Trees make for tough picture taking!

 Best Flag display!

DHS contributed to lots of signage, Thanks Janet!

In the foreground several look toward the grassy knoll

Probably home schooled kids!

 My personal favorite sign!

Who says radical right-wing extremists don't have positive advice!

 The Southern perspective!

Looks like the gang's all there.

 Napolitano Must Go!

Congress loses the Brussels Griffon vote!

In an ironic twist of fate, one of the speakers and organizers works for Homeland Security and is probably reporting himself even as this is written. Given the weather I'd say this was a successful event and this reporter looks forward to participating in upcoming protests.

Mr. Bollywood Goes to Delhi

0409091623_M_040909_week4.jpg

Bollywood gets out the vote!

Proving that politics is not just for wealthy American celebrities, Bollywood stars are in the thick of the Indian elections, as one of their own, Vinod Khanna, actor and sometimes producer, representing the Bharatiya Janata Party, or more simply the BJ Party, reminiscent of an American President who was closely aligned with Hollywood celebrities, seeks a return to office in the general elections this year.

Indian elections take place in five phases which at first glance seems very complicated but is in fact very similar to the American election process. The first phase begins with the announcing of the candidates for office followed by campaigning and the traditional offering of the bribes, a senior BJ Party member was caught on tape distributing money at a rally for his son who is a candidate for office.

In American elections the third phase, or as it is called in India, the scrutiny of the candidates phase, usually takes place during the campaign and is referred to in America as the “gotcha phase”. India apparently rolls out all their dirty tricks in a single time frame; the media must really hate this part!

It is in phase four that we begin to see the differences emerge between American politics and the Indian system. Phase four in India is Election Day which would suggest that they completely skip the traditional American “stuffing of the ballot box” phase, sometimes known of as the ACORN phase, and go directly to a counting of the ballots. It also appears, at least to western eyes, that there is no provision for the “finding of the mystery ballots” phase vital to any close election in the U.S. and also absent is a “divining of intent” phase which is actually part of phase five in America.

Phase five seems anti-climatic by our standards with a simple naming of the winners rather the much more enjoyable contesting of the ballots phase, followed by the endless lawsuits phase, which have become traditional in U.S. elections but this divergence likely can be attributed to India having so many more political parties, or it may just be impractical in a country of one billion souls actually conducting a free election as opposed to the much simpler Chinese model.

I like Mr. Khanna’s chances in this election. No, not because of his clout with Bollywood stars; it turns out that he appears to be the only one running whose name isn’t Ghandi.

President Obama Frozen in Terror

After nearly 90 days of broadcasting weakness and incompetence to the world the President seems to be gripped by fear as every tin pot dictator on the planet, including four guys bobbing around in a drifting lifeboat, do an imitation of High School jocks delivering a mega wedgie and stuffing the pencil neck geek into a school locker.

Why are these pirates still breathing? Mr. Obama, are you a man or a teleprompter?

Networks Feel the Pinch

According to a story on USAToday online, network television is feeling the recession and responding by passing on high salaried “A” list stars in favor of more obscure and therefore lower paid talent.

I thought that this revelation might signal the right time to reveal to my readers that Sgt Relic will be making a pilot for a possible slot in the fall lineup. It is tentatively titled “Getting By” and yours truly plays a retiree who seeks to supplement his meager social security and demolished 401k by assassinating “A” list stars and other high profile Hollyweird leftists on the weekends.

Our hero, John, employs an array of James Bond type devices and weapons, including a Rascal capable of 120 mph with rocket launchers and rear facing mini-guns, as well as weapons and surveillance equipment disguised as canes, walkers, heating pads, and Dr Scholl’s products.

In the pilot episode John and his crack team of gray beards infiltrates a Wal-Mart disguised as greeters as they attempt to take out a wealthy Hollyweird producer known to take advantage of the $4 prescription deal. They miss the target because he showed up during nap time and the team is forced to improvise.

Watch for it in your fall lineup!

Honda Connects Human Brain to Robot

Honda Motor Co., once considered a world leader in robotics seems to have fallen behind the U.S. in robot technology. Honda recently demonstrated that their Asimo prototype is capable of acting on transmitted human thoughts to perform simple tasks such as raising it’s hand. The robotics gap is truly shocking!

The people of the United States, having recently elected a TelePrompter as Commander in Chief, are light years ahead in this technology.

Honda said the technology wasn't quite ready for a live demonstration because of possible distractions in the person's thinking

Well that should be easy to overcome! Humans are rarely distracted, right?

Honda said, “Another problem is that brain patterns differ greatly among individuals

Seriously, anyone who blogs on TH could have told them that!

The idea of a thought controlled robot calls a few scenarios to mind that Honda may want to consider.

For example: I am lounging in the family room with Asimo while watching a rerun of Mystery Science Theater 3000. The wife, who has a different agenda planned for that Saturday afternoon, berates me for being my usual lazy self. I begin to think how nice it would be if I could just place my hands around her throat and squeeze real hard.

Do see where I’m going with this? Who gets the needle? Me? Asimo?

Another possible scenario would involve the Honda Companies hope that a car might one day drive itself.

Scenario: I am driving my brand new Honda Asimo on the interstate when a thoughtless driver (remember the distractions problem) cuts me off and after rendering the traditional one finger salute my thoughts turn to how nice it would be to ram this nimnul in the rear and run him off the road.

How does the judge figure out what I was thinking when I blame it on the car? Will my insurance rates go up and how many points does my Asimo get on it’s license?

I’m sure I’m not the only one who has ridden for miles behind a driver who was driving 20 miles under the speed limit and became convinced that his car was going faster than his brain.

Fortunately, I doubt that I will see this particular future, a fact that I don’t regret.

White People Did It!

We live in confusing times. According to a statement by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, given during a joint news conference with the deservedly maligned U.K. Prime Minister Gordon Brown, blamed the current financial crisis on "white people with blue eyes". There's a real statesman for you.....whitey did it!

This revelation very likely took Mr. Brown, a blue-eyed white person, and the proud possessor of 25 brand new DVDs he can't play in Britain, totally by surprise but it is thought that he gets a pass because he only has one real eye and is affectionately referred to by members of Parliament as the "One-Eyed Scottish Idiot". It's also good news for whitey here in the U.S. where only about 1 in 6 Americans have blue eyes. Soooo, the good news is that most of us are off the hook for this disaster since we are not genetically predisposed to be responsible for financial difficulties. Brazilian genetic science must be very advanced to have made this connection but I guess it could just be racism.

Who knows, there might be something to this. According to a President's Day piece by Medved, the TH guy not to be confused with the evil Russian President, I know it's easy to get them mixed up, only five presidents have had brown eyes and they are not usually mentioned among the great leaders in history. What can we infer from this information? Obama definitely doesn't have blue eyes putting him in a category with the not so great LBJ, long hailed for his financial acumen and the Great Society, and Tricky Dick who gave us the price and wage freeze, took us off the gold standard, and it is rumored set this whole chain of events in motion by borrowing 50 bucks from Zhou Enlai.

Using the Brazilian's presidents reasoning Obama should be a financial wunderkind!

Anybody seen any evidence of that yet?

I think El Presidente may be eating mangoes that have been out in the sun too long!

Where is Our Daniel Hannan?

No lisps, no political speak, no teleprompter! This is how a statesman speaks. The question is: Who is our Daniel Hannan and where is he hiding?

Isn't it about time that we saw this kind of speech delivered in our own congress? When will our Daniel Hannan take Red Nanny, Harry Reid, and the list of long serving members who are at the heart of this financial crisis to task. Democrats and Republicans who have had a hand in crafting the legislation that has been over 30 years in the making need their actions to be laid at their feet and in a very public way.

National Tea Party April 15th

A grassroots taxpayer rebellion has captured the publics attention following the call for a new Boston Tea Party by CNBC reporter Rick Santelli. The National Tax Day Tea Party idea is catching on and tea parties are scheduled across the country for April 15th. Radio Talker, Glenn Beck. has been on this subject and sent out a link today to the following YouTube video. This is an old friend to some of us and his period imitation of Thomas Paine has appeared on TH blogs before. This writer doesn't completely agree with every word but it is presented here for the spirit of it's overall content. You be the judge!

Information on planning or getting involved in a Tea Party near you can be obtained by clicking the link above. Our own local media star here a TownHall, blogger Nee, now living in Chicago, has already been involved in one of these events and wound up being interviewed by the local Fox affiliated. Incredibly they didn't have to bleep her once! Just kidding Nee!!!

For those of you in Virginia who would like to become involved, information is available by clicking on the Virginia link at http://www.taxdayteaparty.com/. The time to stand up and be counted is long overdue! Time to take it to the streets!

Buffett says, "Everything will be alright."

The Avis of American billionaires, Warren Buffett, speaking in an interview on CNBC said the economy has "fallen off a cliff". The Omaha NE mogul who endorsed Mr. Obama in the last election, apparently believing that nationalizing everything in sight and spending incredible amounts of tax dollars, the cost to be borne by future generations, is the answer to our economic woes.  He also called upon our nations leaders, particularly those in the legislative branch, to stop the partisan bickering over what solutions are best for America.

This writer was confused by this last statement having labored all these years under the impression that it was the function of the congress to debate and arrive at the best decision for the country. Is that just something they do for C-Span? Should our national government be more like the great double play combination of Tinkers to Evers to Chance, with Red Nanny writing the bill, whipping it over to "Land Deal" Harry for his approval who then sends it with the speed of a Gossage fastball to the Oval Office for rubber stamping?

The reality is that congressional republicans can talk to their hearts content but in the end they are outvoted so republican counter-proposals carry the same weight as your opinion did concerning what refrigerator your parents were going to buy. Maybe it wasn't a frig but you remember the conversation, it goes like this; "What do you think of this one son?", you respond, "I like the little one that would fit in my room!", and the answer is, "Well this is one we're getting!" We are close enough to single solution politics as it is.

Did Warren miss the fact that nobody in congress EVEN READ the 787 billion dollar stimulus bill? Perhaps that was his point. It would seem logical to view floor debate over a bill THAT NOBODY ACTUALLY READ to appear to be partisan side taking!!!! I mean, republicans voted AGAINST it without knowing what was in it, but then didn't democrats vote FOR IT without knowing what they were in favor of.

Mr. Buffett, a prominent member of Team Obama as part of the President's economic brain trust continued, "What is required is a commander in chief that's looked at like a commander in chief in a time of war." I couldn't say if Mr. Obama is looked upon as a war time commander in chief but I will agree that sometimes he looks "like one". Mixing metaphors, lets play the old NFL "you make the call" game with the following pictures.

Unemployment Tops 10% in the Golden State

The L.A. Times reported today that the unemployment rate in California has risen above the 10% level leaving 1 in 10 Californians out of work. Hardest hit were retail, manufacturing and construction industries but the film industry was close behind the big three in shedding jobs. There has even been talk that some California State employees, now currently being furloughed two days a month, could actually be terminated, which threatens to slow the growth of the very important bureaucratic sector in the Golden State.

Many of these job cuts will not necessarily have the impact that some might expect. The manufacturing and construction industry, long a bastion of employment for illegal aliens, expects that as soon as their unemployment benefits run out these undocumented workers will probably return to their native countries until the economy improves, “very likely only returning for medical treatment as needed or to birth a child” said a L.A. County supervisor.

What is being under reported is the impact that the recession is having on other less visible sectors of the economy? In Orange County there are reports that wealthy trophy wives, feeling the pinch of recession, also have to economize. Although it appears they leave the OC in search of bargains not available in their local Whole Foods market, or in the case of one housewife who wished to remain anonymous, “It’s too icky to be seen buying boxed Merlot and powdered Mai Tai mix in my own supermarket.” The next victim of the recession may be the cosmetic surgery industry as wealthy spouses cease repairing their existing wives and rely more on the homegrown organic market to fill their requirements.

The recession’s effect on retail has been the most troublesome to an often overlooked area of the economy, that of the illegal substance industry. There has been stiff competition at the manufacturing level for years and distribution has always been highly competitive in this industry that has also seen massive incursion by illegal aliens.

Homegrown dealers, usually biker gangs, have been fighting for market share against the Mexican drug cartels and transplanted gangs such as MS-13 for years. A spokesman for bikers gave the following statement after forcefully insisting on anonymity, “It’s murder out there, literally murder”, “These dudes are eroding our bottom line, the cost of new weapons and ammunition is ruinous - not to mention gas prices. Do you have any idea what it costs to keep all those Escalades and Navigators on the road?”

Also suffering are the consumers. Many are being forced to cut back on their drug use or in some cases making do with cheaper and less effective drugs, and in some rare cases, resorting to alcohol use alone. There has been talk on the streets of bringing back a WWII standard, which in this case is referred to as “Drugless Day”, in emulation of the “Meatless Day” rationing strategy of that period.

The impact of this recession is making the life of most junkies very difficult. Retail stores, long a mainstay of the theft needed to support these habits are so empty that shoplifters are hard pressed to conceal themselves while they ply their trade. Small businesses are closing rapidly thus drying up the traditional “heist” locations. A young man concealed by a hoodie told this reporter, “Yo, it was really embarrassing, like me an my boys rolled up in the C-store and there was like, two other crews already in da place, this be whack.” It was further stated that with Mr. Obama and Attorney General Holder making noises about gun control the public is arming itself at an alarming rate further increasing the difficulties of these hard working Americans.

While most high end thieves, such as politicians, liberal support groups, bankers and market types are receiving massive taxpayer support, little is being done to relieve the suffering in those shadow communities which are so much a part of modern American life.
